Accurately defining the transport and evolution of solar energetic particle events (SEPs) as they traverse the inner heliosphere requires improvements in understanding and modeling various areas of heliophysics, from wave-particle interactions in stream interaction regions, and interactions between SEPs and CMEs, to heliospheric magnetic field modeling on finer scales. We present a review of the role these improvements play in aiding accurately predicting the transport of SEPs, including some of the observations that challenge our current limits of SEP understanding and a novel approach to bringing them together in the PSP/SO era using machine learning techniques.
