Hybrid Simulations of Decaying High-Beta Plasma Turbulence

Linear theory predicts a region in wavenumber space where Alfven waves become non-propagating around the ion gyroradius when the plasma beta is greater than 30. Local interactions are no longer able to continue moving energy to smaller scales and thus have the potential to interrupt the turbulent cascade. In this work, we investigate this high-beta gap region using the Parallel Kinetic Perpendicular Moment (PKPM) model within the hybrid gyrokinetic plasma solver GKEYLL. We will present simulations of decaying plasma turbulence and compare the transport of energy as it moves to smaller perpendicular and parallel scales.
