We would like to announce an upcoming workshop entitled “Operational and Exploration Requirements and Research Capabilities for SEP Environment Monitoring and Forecasting Workshop” to be held at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, USA, on October 16-19, 2024 (Wednesday – Saturday). We would like to encourage the community to participate, so please save the date and mark your calendar. While the logistics of the workshop are currently in progress and will be shared in early summer, we provide some details below:
Workshop objectives: The primary goals of the workshop “Operational and Exploration Requirements and Research Capabilities for SEP Environment Monitoring and Forecasting” are to highlight research advances in the SEP modeling and forecasting capabilities including, but not limited to, utilization of machine learning, to understand monitoring and forecasting requirements for SEP events from both research and operational perspectives, and to address supporting observational data and preparation needs. The specific objectives of the workshop are:
* Identify the needs and requirements of operational and exploration agencies and other users in terms of quantities related to the energetic particle content for nowcasting and forecasting, and the corresponding timeframes;
* Revise current observational data availability and coverage, data preparation, and data categorization efforts, and identify data-related resources in support of the above requirements for research and operations;
* Highlight the current modeling and forecasting capabilities of the community and identify models that are potentially tunable for predicting the quantities of interest, as well as emphasize research directions allowing to address such predictions in the future.
Workshop organizing committees:
Scientific Organizing Committee (SOC): Viacheslav Sadykov (GSU), Irina Kitiashvili (NASA ARC), Ron Turner (ANSER), Kathryn Whitman (NASA JSC), Alexander Kosovichev (NJIT), Kimberly Moreland (NOAA), Petrus Martens (GSU), Manolis Georgoulis (JHU APL), Dustin Kempton (GSU), Ming Zhang (FIT), Azim Ahmadzadeh (UMSL)
Local Organizing Committee: Viacheslav Sadykov (GSU), Rafal Angryk (GSU), Dustin Kempton (GSU), Berkay Aydin (GSU)
Some logistics details: The workshop will be held at Georgia State University, Atlanta, GA, USA, on October 16-19, 2024. Atlanta is a vibrant city of the US Southeast with many interesting aspects to explore, as well as a large and convenient air transportation hub that will make your travel easy. GSU is located right in downtown Atlanta, with plenty of hotel options to select from. The workshop will have no registration fees.
We acknowledge the support of this workshop through NASA NASA ROSES 2023 program “F.2 Topical Workshops, Symposia, and Conferences”. We are also thankful to the Metcalf Travel Award committee for providing support for three Metcalf lecturers for the workshop.
