New Student Representative:

Say hello to the newest SHINE Student Representative, Mia Mancuso! She will be taking over as the Junior SHINE Student Representative. She is excited to share her ideas for improving SHINE in Charleston this summer!

Mia is a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate in Applied Physics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). She received her B.S. in Physics from New York University Abu Dhabi in 2020. Mia studies active region flares and filaments using high resolution ground based observations primarily from Big Bear Solar Observatory and the Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope. Her goal is to understand the underlying fine scale structures that lead to eruptions, and identify precursor signatures. Mia hopes to amplify the voices of students and help them find their place in the heliophysics community. In her free time she likes to read, play soccer, be outside in nature, and bake.

Financial Support Information:

For graduate students who receive support from NSF, travel/lodging arrangements will be made by Christine Shultz. Once financial aid decisions are made, you will receive information from Christine directly. If you receive financial support, you will also be provided a registration fee waiver code. Because of this, if you are applying for financial support DO NOT register for the conference or book any travel/lodging until you hear back from the financial aid decision. Decisions will be released no later than February 15, 2025. As of now, applications are open and should be submitted by January 30, 2025. Visit https://helioshine.org/shine-financial-aid-application/ for more information!

Communication this year:

We are continuing our use of the student mailing list this year. Make sure you are signed up for the mailing list service (you can do this through the sidebar on https://helioshine.org). If you are receiving this newsletter as an email, congratulations! You are already signed up for this mailing list, and you do not need to sign up again. If you know of any students who would be interested in receiving SHINE-related newsletters, please pass this information along to them.

As was the case last year, all student newsletters will be archived on the SHINE website under the “Students > Student Newsletter” Tab (https://helioshine.org/category/student-newsletter/). If you lose a newsletter in your email, you can find a copy of it here. All past newsletters from 2023 on are stored here as well.

This year we are continuing to use the same Discord channel as a means of communicating with just us students; if you were in the Discord channel last year, no need to join again! If you are new to the Discord channel this year or left at the end of last year’s workshop, please use the following link to join: https://discord.gg/9HCaYKWNuy. We will post some sporadic reminders in the Discord channel but will continue to use the newsletter for all official correspondences.

We hope to create a place for just students in the Discord channel. If you were in the channel last year and are no longer a graduate student, we kindly ask that you leave the chat to just the current students. Similarly, if you are no longer a student and no longer wish to receive the graduate student-specific newsletters, please click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of the newsletter.

We look forward to seeing all of you at SHINE 2025 in Charleston, SC.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at shine.student.reps@gmail.com.
