New Observations and Results that Motivate the Need for 3D Flare Models

Authors: Marcel Corchado Albelo (University of Colorado, Boulder)

In this talk we review recent observations that challenge the applicability of the CSHKP 2D standard flare model. From observations that show the dynamics of failed eruptions, different types of flare ribbon morphology, to the potential role of non-collisional physics in flare energy partitioning and transport to the solar atmosphere and interplanetary space. These observations challenge us to consider the 3D nature of solar flares, the role of new data processing technique, and new and upcoming observing capabilities.
