ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Papers – Forecasting Solar Energetic Particle Events: Gaps, Challenges, and the Pressing Need for Mitigation

We invite submissions to a new Research Topic focused on advancing the forecasting of Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) events, high-energy radiation bursts that pose risks to astronauts, satellites, aviation, and space operations. The call seeks studies that address key forecasting challenges, including SEP source populations, acceleration mechanisms, particle transport, and the prediction of extreme events, critical for space weather operational needs.

We welcome contributions involving curation of new datasets, observational analyses, forecasting methodologies (physics-based, statistical, AI/ML), and gaps identification and mitigation strategies.

Topic Editors: S. Chatterjee (SwRI-Boulder), M. A. Dayeh (SwRI-San Antonio), L. Zhao (UMich), K. Whitman (KBR).
