Communication this year:

We are continuing our use of the student mailing list this year. Make sure you are signed up for the mailing list service (you can do this through the sidebar on https://helioshine.org). If you are receiving this newsletter as an email, congratulations! You are already signed up for this mailing list, and you do not need to sign up again. If you know of any students who would be interested in receiving SHINE-related newsletters, please pass this information along to them.

As was the case last year, all student newsletters will be archived on the SHINE website under the “Students > Student Newsletter” Tab (https://helioshine.org/category/student-newsletter/). If you lose a newsletter in your email, you can find a copy of it here. All past newsletters from 2023 on are stored here as well.

This year we are continuing to use the same Discord channel as a means of communicating with just us students; if you were in the Discord channel last year, no need to join again! If you are new to the Discord channel this year or left at the end of last year’s workshop, please use the following link to join: https://discord.gg/Kxmy9zzak9. We will post some sporadic reminders in the Discord channel but will continue to use the newsletter for all official correspondences, so if you do not wish to join the Discord channel, you will not miss anything.

We hope to create a place for just students in the Discord channel. If you were in the channel last year and are no longer a graduate student, we kindly ask that you leave the chat to just the current students. Similarly, if you are no longer a student and no longer wish to receive the graduate student-specific newsletters, please click “unsubscribe” at the bottom of the newsletter.

New Student Representative:

Say hello to the newest SHINE Student Representative, Elizabeth Wraback! She will be taking over as the Junior SHINE Student Representative. She has been working for the past several months in preparation for this upcoming SHINE in Juneau, AK.

Elizabeth is a 3rd year Ph.D. candidate in the Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. She received her B.S. in both Astronomy and Physics in 2021 from the University of Maryland and her M.S. in 2023 en route to her Ph.D. Elizabeth studies coronal mass ejections (CMEs) with global magnetohydrodynamics models for comparison to extreme ultraviolet spectroscopic observations. Her overarching goal in science is to understand the connection between what is observed remotely near the Sun and what is measured in situ in CMEs. Elizabeth seeks to increase the levels of student engagement and inclusivity within the heliophysics community. Outside of work, Elizabeth loves to do ballet, read, and knit new creations!

Dates of Interest:

We are currently working to determine the dates for registration. We will send out a notice of when registration and abstract submissions are due. The dates of the conference are as follows:
Student Day: August 11th, 2024
Workshop: August 12th – 16th, 2024

Financial aid applications are open! Please check the website for more information or follow this link (https://helioshine.org/shine-financial-aid-application/ ) to fill out your financial aid application. The deadline for financial aid applications is much earlier this year than in years past, so take note and don’t delay in filling out your application!

Financial Aid Application Deadline: March 15th, 2024

Financial Support Information:

For graduate students who receive support from NSF, travel/lodging arrangements will be made by Christine Shultz. Once financial aid decisions are made, you will receive information from Christine directly. If you receive financial support, you will also be provided a registration fee waiver code. Because of this, if you are applying for financial support DO NOT register for the conference or book any travel/lodging until you hear back from the financial aid decision. As of now, applications are open and should be submitted by March 15th, 2024. Visit https://helioshine.org/shine-financial-aid-application/ for more information!

Pre-conference survey:

To make Student Day the best it can be, we ask that you take a few moments and let us know what is important to you! It is the easiest way for us to gauge the community’s interest. We will combine the responses from this survey and the 2023 Post-SHINE survey to hopefully create the best SHINE Student Day we have seen so far! Please follow the link below to the survey:

Tutorial Posters:

This year, we are revamping Student Tutorial Talks into Student Tutorial Posters. We hope that by creating posters, we will be able to mirror the SHINE workshop poster-centric atmosphere and cover more tutorial topics. On Student Day, we will ask that you give a lightning talk on your poster. We also aim to keep the posters up throughout the week so all students (and senior scientists) can reference them as desired. We will share more information on the tutorial poster organization at a later time, but ask in the meantime, if you are interested in presenting a tutorial poster please select “yes” on the question “Are you willing to present a tutorial talk on student day?” when filling out the financial aid application.

We look forward to seeing all of you at SHINE 2024 in Juneau, AK. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at shine.student.reps@gmail.com.
Your SHINE Student Reps,

Fallon and Elizabeth
