SHINE 2024 Workshop Announcement

We are pleased to announce the venue of the SHINE Workshop. Kindly make note of the following details:

  • Workshop Dates: August 12-16, 2024
  • Location: Juneau, Alaska
  • Student Day:  Sunday August 11

Further details, including the agenda and registration information, will be communicated shortly.

2024 SHINE Workshop Session Proposals

This year, we are requesting session proposals through an online google form (link provided below). The deadline for session proposals is 2024 March 1.

As a reminder, SHINE sessions last 2.5-3 hours and consist of 1 or 2 scene-setting speakers that give (each) a ~15-min talk to set-up the discussion, followed by discussion. The exact format is left up to the organizers, but in no case, there should be a succession of AGU-like presentations. We expect to select only ~20 sessions and had to reject or merge sessions in the past few years.

Candidatures for the next SHINE Chair

The steering committee is accepting candidatures (including self-nominations) to serve as the next SHINE chair, covering 2025-2027. Interested candidates should send their cv and a 1-page letter explaining their interest in the position, their past involvement with the SHINE workshop, and their vision for SHINE and any ideas or changes they may want to implement by 2024 March 15. Past experience with the SHINE workshop, either as a member of its steering committee or a session organizer is required.

SHINE has a 9-member steering committee, including the chair and the workshop coordinator. The workshop coordinator, currently Dr. Nada Al-Haddad, is the PI of the NSF SHINE workshop grant and is in charge of most of the organizational details (selection of the venue, schedule, etc.). The role of the steering committee, under the lead of its chair, is to select the session proposals, select the plenary speakers, coordinate any town halls and ensure that the workshop maintains its identity as a discussion-based workshop, by interfacing with the session organizers, requesting feedback and reviewing the sessions after they occur. Together with the workshop coordinator (who is part of the steering committee), they also interface with the NSF program officers and the student reps.

The newly selected chair shall work jointly with the current outgoing chair on the organization of the 2024 SHINE workshop to ensure a smooth transition during 2024.

Thanks,
