Kinetic Physics of Magnetic Field-aligned Streaming of Pickup Ions

Recent global heliosphere models find that large-scale pressure gradients can drive magnetic field-aligned streaming of pickup ions in the heliosheath. We investigate the kinetic physics associated with pickup ion streaming. Right-hand and left-hand resonant instabilities are excited, similar to the case of a hot ion beam. The resulting wave-particle interaction limits the velocity difference between the thermal and pickup ions, and the associated heat flux that contributes to the energy flow and dissipation.
